Verizon live chat would not give me a discount on a new network extender, so I bought one here instead from "Noble Planet" with Amazon Fulfillment.
I now have 3-5 bars of signal instead of 0-2. No more dropped calls or other ill-effects of poor signal.
I did a speed test of the data through this and it came to about 2.8 Mbps download and 0.8 Mbps upload through my Samsung Galaxy S3. But since data through it still counts against my data plan, I still use WiFi which is a whole lot faster anyway.
Activation took less than 1 hour. To activate, I had to call Verizon customer support and get to a live person (I did this by ignoring all its options until it finally asked me if I needed help with something not previously mentioned). Before I got to talk to a person, it asked for my account password. This is the password used to log in to your account on verizon's website. For any letters (including uppercase letters), just press the number associated with the letter; one key press per letter or number in your password. Also, be prepared to provide other account information such as your billing password (this is different from the account password, assuming you've set up a billing password).
All in all, I am quite pleased with it and it was quite a bit cheaper than buying it direct from Verizon.
